SYMPTOMS | PREVENTION | FIRST AID | |
Inhalation | Cough. Sore throat. | Use local exhaust or breathing protection. | Fresh air, rest. |
Skin | Redness. Burning sensation. Itching. | Protective gloves. | Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. |
Eyes | Redness. Pain. | Wear safety goggles. | First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention. |
Ingestion | Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. | Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. | Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention. |
Start with phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) and formaldehyde (CH2O) as the main raw materials.
Mix PCl3 and CH2O in a reaction vessel under controlled conditions, such as low temperature and
inert gas atmosphere, to form chloromethylphosphonic acid (CMPA).
React CMPA with formaldehyde in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), to produce
tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC).
Neutralize THPC with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to form Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate
(THPS).
The overall reaction can be represented as follows:
PCl3 + 4 CH2O + 4 NaOH → THPC + 4 NaCl + 3 H2O
THPC + H2SO4 → THPS + HCl
