SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat. Use local exhaust or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest.
Skin Redness. Burning sensation. Itching. Protective gloves. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Wear safety goggles. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.

Start with phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) and formaldehyde (CH2O) as the main raw materials.
Mix PCl3 and CH2O in a reaction vessel under controlled conditions, such as low temperature and inert gas atmosphere, to form chloromethylphosphonic acid (CMPA).
React CMPA with formaldehyde in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), to produce tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC).
Neutralize THPC with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to form Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS).
The overall reaction can be represented as follows:
PCl3 + 4 CH2O + 4 NaOH → THPC + 4 NaCl + 3 H2O
THPC + H2SO4 → THPS + HCl

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate(THPS) used for?
