Dimethyl methylphosphonate and ethyl chloroacetate are reacted in the presence of sodium hydroxide to obtain dimethyl formylmethylphosphonate.

Dimethyl formylmethylphosphonate is reacted with ammonia solution to obtain aminotrimethylphosphonic acid.

Aminotrimethylphosphonic acid is reacted with sodium carbonate to obtain sodium aminotri(methylphosphonic acid) (ATMP Na4).

ATMP Na4 is the neutral sodium salt of ATMP, which can prevent scale-forming salts from forming scale in water, especially calcium carbonate scale. ATMP Na4 is suitable for thermal power plants, circulating cooling water in oil refineries, and oilfield reinjection water systems. ATMP Na4 also has good compatibility with some other additives. ATMP Na4 is especially suitable for neutral to acidic formulations without ammonia odor.
